Irish Wolfhounds are often cited as the tallest dog breed in the world, with some reaching up to 3 feet in height (measured at the shoulder when standing on all four legs!). The Irish Wolfhound is a breed of large sighthound that has, by its presence and substantial size, inspired literature, poetry and mythology. One of the largest of all breeds of dog, the breed is used by coursing hunters who have prized it for its ability to dispatch game caught by other, swifter sighthounds. One of the tallest of all AKC breeds, Irish Wolfhounds are actually docile and patient creatures. Despite originally being used to hunt wolves, they are now more likely to be found as companion dogs.





GREAT DANE

The Great Dane is a German breed of large mastiff-sighthound, which descends from hunting dogs of the Middle Ages used to hunt bears, wild boar, and deer. They were also used as guardian dogs of German nobility. It is one of the two largest dog breeds in the world, along with the Irish Wolfhound. Tall, lean and imposing, the Great Dane is patient and can be sweet with children. Despite this, the breed can be intimidating and protective. Great Danes are actually German in origin – not Danish.





SCOTTISH DEERHOUND

The Scottish Deerhound, or simply the Deerhound, is a breed of large sighthound, once bred to hunt the red deer by coursing. In outward appearance it is similar to the Greyhound, but larger and more heavily boned, with a rough coat. Their coat can take many colors, although the dark blue-gray is most common. An easygoing dog, the Deerhound enjoys both the great outdoors as well as staying cozy inside with their family. Dignified Deerhounds love a good nap and a good romp, with their ancestry tied to a strong hunting ability, according to DogTime. In fact, these dogs were once so prized by nobility that no one with a rank lower than an Earl could own one.





BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER

The Black Russian Terrier, also known as the Chornyi Terrier, is a breed of dog from the USSR. It was originally bred in the Red Star Kennel during the late 1940s and the early 1950s for use as a military and working dog. The "terrier" name may make you think of a much smaller dog, but the Black Russian Terrier is far from a Yorkie. A powerful and courageous breed, these large dogs are loyal to their family and can be standoffish toward new people. However, they are gentle with children and can be sociable and affectionate when they learn strangers are not something to be suspicious of.

The Newfoundland is a large breed of working dog. They can be black, grey, brown, or black and white. The Tibetan Mastiff is a large Tibetan dog breed. Noble, regal and the guardians of the Himalayas, the exact origins of the Tibetan Mastiff are unknown. Despite their notable size, they can make devoted family pets.

The Bully Kutta is a type of large dog that originated in the Indian subcontinent, dating back to the 16th century. The Bully Kutta is a working dog used for hunting and guarding. The Borzoi or Russian Hunting Sighthound is a Russian breed of hunting dog of sighthound type. It was formerly used for wolf hunting, and until 1936 was known as the Russian Wolfhound. The Neapolitan Mastiff or Mastino Napoletano is an Italian breed of large dog of mastiff type. It was recognised as a breed by the Ente Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana in 1949, and accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1956. This large breed dates back to the days of Ancient Rome. Its huge head and powerful frame was used to ward off intruders. The Mastino is loyal to its loved ones but suspicious of strangers. These giant couch potatoes are content with naps in the sun and need their pet parents to take them on walks so they get enough exercise. The Bullmastiff is an English breed of dog of mastiff type and large size, with a solid build and a short muzzle. The Bullmastiff was used by English gamekeepers to stop poachers in the 1800s. Despite not being as large as its cousin, the Mastiff, its muscular frame acts as an effective deterrent.

Standing at 30 inches and weighing as much as many grown men, the Mastiff has an intimidating, overwhelming presence. Brave, strong and loyal, these dogs require careful training – but thrive as gentle companions.





BLOODHOUND

The bloodhound is a large scent hound, originally bred for hunting deer, wild boar, rabbits, and since the Middle Ages, for tracking people. Believed to be descended from hounds once kept at the Abbey of Saint-Hubert, Belgium, in French it is called le chien de Saint-Hubert. Famous for their keen nose, droopy face, and deep howl, Bloodhounds benefit from mentally stimulating activities to keep them occupied and out of trouble. Their patient nature helps them deal well with children as long as the kids do not pull on their long, floppy ears.





ROTTWEILER

The Rottweiler is a breed of domestic dog, regarded as medium-to-large or large. The dogs were known in German as Rottweiler Metzgerhund, meaning Rottweil butchers' dogs, because their main use was to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market. Dignified and slow to anger, Rottweilers are trustworthy around children if raised with them, the AKC states. Their natural guarding instinct is coupled with great courage. They are obedient and moderately intelligent.





ESTRELA MOUNTAIN DOG

The Estrela Mountain Dog is a large breed of dog from the Estrela Mountains of Portugal. They are a livestock guardian dog bred to guard herds and homesteads and also kept as a family pet. Believed to be the oldest dog breed in Portugal, the Estrela Mountain Dog is an excellent companion and livestock guardian, according to the AKC. OTTERHOUND

The Otterhound is an English dog breed. It is a scent hound and is currently recognised by the Kennel Club as a Vulnerable Native Breed with around 600 animals worldwide. The Alaskan Malamute is not as big as other dogs, but that does not make them any less mighty. These dogs are loyal and broad-shouldered, strong enough to pull a sled in the arctic region like their cousin the Siberian Husky.





BRIARD

The Briard or Berger de Brie is a French breed of large shepherd dog, traditionally used both for herding sheep and to defend them. It was first shown at the first Paris dog show, in 1863; the first Briard to be registered in the Livre des Origines Françaises, the national stud-book, was Sans Gêne in 1885. Often described as a "heart wrapped in fur", according to the AKC, Briards flaunt a wavy coat of fur topped by a hairdo with a middle part. RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large dog breed originally bred in Southern Africa. The original breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, in 1922, and approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1927. Its forebears can be traced to the ridged hunting and guardian dogs of the Khoikhoi.

The German Shepherd, also known in Britain as an Alsatian, is a German breed of working dog of medium to large size. GIANT SCHNAUZER

The Giant Schnauzer is a breed of dog developed in the 17th century in Germany. It is the largest of the three breeds of Schnauzer - the other two breeds being the Standard Schnauzer and the Miniature Schnauzer. Not only does it shed minimally, according to Purina, but it is also an intelligent and loyal companion.

The Samoyed is a breed of medium-sized herding dogs with thick, white, double-layer coats. They are spitz-type dogs which take their name from the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia. Although Samoyed dogs are not that big in size, their thick, fluffy coats make them look bigger and maybe better. They have delightful smiles, and their soft fur makes petting them very irresistible.
