WHY SHOULD YOUR DOG WEAR A HAT? This article proudly presented by WWW.ROVER.COM
Ever since people have had dogs, there has been an inexplicable need to dress those pups in adorable ways. Some dogs are better left naked with the coat that nature gave them. Others love the extra attention and are happy to wear clothes just like their human companions. Here are a few of those brave canines who wear all sorts of silly hats for our amusement. They may not understand it, but they know it makes us happy.
Why should my dog wear a hat? Consider the reasons you might wear a hat: for sun protection, comfort, and fashion. Dog hats offer the same benefits. Here are some reasons to put a hat on your dog:
Help them see better in bright conditions
Protect their eyes from bright light that can aggravate cataracts, Pannus, and light sensitivity
Shade delicate facial skin from harmful UV and UPF rays. Although dogs are not susceptible to the same sun damage as humans, some breeds with thin coats need extra protection.
Dogs look supes adorable in hats!
The bottom line is, hats provide sun protection and can make your dog more comfortable on a sunny day. Of course, you just might put a hat on your dog just for fun. Nothing wrong with that, so long as your dog is comfortable wearing clothes.
What if my dog won't wear a hat? Let's be real: some dogs can't handle headgear. But don't worry, there are plenty of other options for protecting your dog's eyes, ears, and face from the sun. Some dogs are more comfortable wearing sunglasses than hats. You can also put sunscreen on sensitive dog parts, as long as it's pet-safe. If your dog absolutely won't wear anything on their head, keep them inside out of the sun, and use a portable sun shade when spending time outdoors.
We know that the clothing we wear can influence our dog's behavior, so it shouldn't be a surprise that hats can also trigger an unusual behavioral response. When it comes to hats, more often than not the behavior your dog displays is less than favorable. You have probably seen a dog throw a barking fit after encountering someone in a hat, but why is this?
This odd behavioral quirk is common in many dogs and stems back to lack of thorough socialization during critical puppyhood periods. Between the ages of four weeks and four months, your dog goes through a critical imprinting phase. During this time, it's important that you expose them to as many new situations and experiences as possible. The more they are exposed to as a puppy, the less fearful they will be as a grown dog.
During this socialization, one of the new experiences you dog should have is meeting people in different costumes and accessories, including hats. The reason for this is that dogs have difficulty understanding "removable parts" and see them as an alien object that changes the silhouette they are familiar with. As you can imagine, this would be more than a little unsettling.
If your dog is beyond its critical imprinting period, does that mean they will have to live the rest of their lives in fear of hats? Fortunately, no. Dogs of any age can become comfortable with hats through consistent and positive exposure. To help your dog conquer their fear of hats, begin by wearing a hat around them for a few weeks. During this time, you should also introduce your dog to friends wearing hats.
To make sure each interaction is positive, both you and your hat-wearing friends can periodically give your dog treats. This way, your dog will begin to associate hats with positive rewards. Over time, your dog will come to learn that hats are not terrifying body snatching aliens; instead they are delicious treat givers.
Fear of Hats in Dogs is Not Unusual If your dog is afraid of hats, rest assured, you are not alone. Countless dog owners face this problem. Often dog owners are quite surprised when their dog unexpectedly barks at one of their friends. Hats are not the only objects dogs may fear. Backpacks, sunglasses, umbrellas, bags or anything that alters a person's natural silhouette may cause the calmest dog to become alert and fearful. It may happen anytime, anywhere, from walking on the boardwalk and seeing a sailor for the first time, to seeing the postal carrier carry a large bag full of mail.
Many dogs are also disturbed by people carrying large items such as ladders, doors, baby strollers or a large pot of petunias. Many dogs do not like people wearing hats and often this may be attributed to a lack of thorough socialization during the puppy's crucial socialization phase. If your dog is particularly fearful of people wearing hats, help him out by wearing a hat for a few weeks. Be particulalry fun and rewarding to be around during that time.
When you put the hat away, then act boring. Another nice approach to use when dealing with dogs fearful of hats worn by strangers is to have friends wearing hats walk nearby while you feed your dog treats. Make sure you give those treats before your dog is able to react so the dog makes positive associations. It's important to work under threshold. Expose him to as many people with hats as you can and let him know that great things happen when a person with a hat gets near him. With time and perseverance, you dog may start loving people wearing hats!

HOW TO MEASURE DOG HAT, CAP AND VISOR This article proudly presented by WWW.BADDOG HATS.COM and WWW.DOGHATS COM.AU
If you dont know the breed of your dog, you can measure across the top of your dogs head between the ears and compare to the crown dimension of the hat you are interested in to find the closest match. Hats perch on their heads on the crown between the ears and are held on with elastic loops that go around or in front of the ears, and a ribbon ties the loops together under the chin.
Usually, dog hats come in 4 sizes - Small Medium and Large, these fit most dogs in these size groups:
Small - fits the small dogs, teacup dogs to Italian grey hounds!
Medium - this is a good size for Pugs or Brittanys
Large - best for big dogs Rottweilers or Burmese mountain dogs
X-Large - only for American and English Bulldogs, possibly Mastiffs
MEASURING BRIM WIDTH: Some dogs may fit between sizes. If trying to decide between two sizes, we suggest the one that gives most shade to the eyes, but it it entirely up to each customer.
MEASURING BRIM LENGTH brim length is quite generous but for dogs with skin cancer, custom made brim lengths are available. The length should not impede the dog vision, drinking, eating, sniffing. This means it should preferably NOT be to the very tip of the nose as this would cause the hat to hit the ground when the dog sniffed anything - but this is up to the customer. Most times a custom made brim length is not necessary, but check with your Vet.
HOW TO DO A QUICK SIZE CHECK WITH A PAPER
1. Draw a circle on paper. The diameter of the circle should be the BRIM WIDTH measurement given for the dog hat size you arechecking.
2. Cut out the circle and fold it in half.
3. Place the folded edge just above the dog's eyebrows.
4. Although the brim shape will be different you can then see if the hat is wide enough to cover the eye area.
5. Check the brim length indicated for the size you are checking - it will be different to the paper circle's measurement.
RECOMMENDED HAT PLACEMENT: The hat seamline, where the brim and crown join, should sit just slightly above the "eyebrow" area of the dog so that the brim will shade the eyes. The elastic strap at sides should be halfway between eyes and ears for comfort. But as with any clothing it is entirely up to the preference of the wearer.
