DOG BEACH ETIQUETTE

TARA KAIN's Dog Etiquette
for the Dog-Friendly Beach

With the weather heating up, it's time to start checking out some dog friendly beaches with your four-legged friend! For most dogs, getting to run around in the sand, dip into the waves, and fetch balls out of the water is the best day ever! Here are some tips to ensure that you and your dog have a fun and safe beach experience.

FIRST THINGS FIRST
Check with your local beaches before you pack up the dog, since not all beaches allow them. Depending on the time of year, some beaches allow dogs during the off-season, but summer is a different story. Call ahead or visit the beach's website for information. It's also important if you can bring your dog, to find out whether or not they need to be on leash or if they can roam free. Bring a long leash no matter what, but know ahead of time if there will be an area where a leash isn't necessary. If they don't need to have a leash, only let them be without it if you know for an absolute fact that they will respond to your voice commands.

Other dogs, people, certain scents, birds, etc, may catch their attention and cause them to tune you out, which could be a recipe for disaster - no one wants a dog fight. Some people on the beach, as well as easily frightened children, will be less dog-friendly than others, so be mindful of who your dog might be approaching to avoid any sort of snafu.

DOG at BEACH
Never, EVER
leave your dog unattended!

Even the most well-trained dog can get distracted; pay extra special attention to your surroundings and any potential situations that may cause your dog to wander or run off. Follow ALL of the rules set by the beach. You don't want to be the reason that dogs aren't allowed at that particular beach anymore.

Pro Swimmer
or Doggie Swim Vest?
If you want to bring your dog to the beach, you probably have a good idea that your furry friend loves to swim. If this is the first time your dog will be swimming, you may want to read up on his breed just to be sure. For example, shar peis tend to be afraid of water. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but finding out if swimming is characteristic of the breed will be a good indicator of how enthusiastic or timid they might be. When you bring the pup to the water, if he isn't diving right in, take it slow. Don't force your dog to go in. He may feel more comfortable if you head in first and call him. If you are nervous or unsure, purchasing a dog life vest to bring with you would be a safe bet.

Be Wary
of Temperature Extremes
Depending on where you are in the country, summer at the beach can bring about two extremes: heat from the sun and a cold, cold ocean. Pay attention to how your dog is acting and responding while he's with you throughout the day, since there could be the potential of either heat stroke or hypothermia - if he's been swimming his little heart out.

Some signs of heat stroke in a dog include:
Rapid panting
Bright red tongue
Thick, sticky aliva
Weakness
Vomiting
Diarrhea

If you think that your dog has heat stroke while you're at the beach, take the following actions immediately:
Move the pet into the shade and apply cool not cold water all over their body to gradually lower their temperature.
Apply ice packs or cool towels to the pet's head, neck and chest only. Allow the pet to drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.

Then take him to the nearest vet.

DOG BEACH
Some signs of hypothermia in a dog include:
Lethargy
Weakness
Shivering
Muscle stiffness
Difficulty breathing
Fixed and dilated pupils

If you think that your dog has hypothermia while you are at the beach, take the following actions immediately:

Wrap your dog in towels and blankets that have been warmed by the sun.

Bring extra fresh water in bottles and leave them out in the sun as this warm water can be applied to your dog to bring his body temperature back up.

If your dog has still not stopped shivering and has continued lethargy, bring him to the nearest vet.

As much as we wish, our dogs can't tell us when they are in pain and not feeling good. The above lists are certainly not all-inclusive, so if you notice anything out of the ordinary with your dog's behavior, get him out of the elements immediately.

A few ways to prevent heat stroke is to bring lots of fresh, cool water that they can drink. A spray bottle with cool water that you can spray him down with will also help in temperature regulation. A bonus of having fresh water with you is that you can also clean the sand and salt water from his paws, which can cause irritation and dry out those sensitive pads. Also, since you can't guarantee that you will have access to a shady area, bring an umbrella that he can hang out under.

DOG BEACH

To make sure that hypothermia doesn't strike, bring lots of towels that you can snuggle him in and remove the excess cold salt water. Not only can this warm him up quicker, it also helps in removing the sand and salt water from his fur so he won't be in danger of shaking off on someone else.

DOG BEACH
DO & DO NOT of DOG BEACH

DOG BEACH

The Dos and Don'ts of the Beach
There are hundreds of beaches in the US and Canada that allow dogs, but compared to the number of beaches there are, this is a small percentage. Many beaches allowed dogs at one time, but due to careless owners, had to put a stop to canine patrons. Follow these rules (in addition to the beach's rules), and you'll make sure that you can bring Fido back as many times as he likes.

DOG BEACH SEASHORE
Dog Beach Don'ts:
Don't let your dogs go into areas on the beach where they are not allowed. Dunes and grassy areas need to be protected from any sort of environmental damage that a dog might cause.

Don't let your dog out of your site. Not even once. Paying attention and being proactive will go a long way in protecting you and your dog. The last thing you want is to be sued for a dog fight or by someone that had a run-in with your dog.

Don't forget to bring the leash, beach towels, umbrella, fresh water, and doggie sunscreen - yes, you can actually get sunscreen specifically made for dogs.

Don't leave a mess behind! Don't count on the beach supplying waste bags, so bring your own and be diligent about cleaning up. No one wants to find a surprise just laying on the beach or buried in the sand.

DOG BEACH SEASHORE
Dog Beach Dos:
Do make sure your dog's vaccinations are current and that he's wearing the proper ID. Keep your vet's number on hand just in case something happens.

Do check the ocean for jellyfish and stingrays. A sting to your dog will be sure to ruin both his and your experience.

Do set a time limit for your beach trip. A couple hours might be just the right amount of time at the beach, depending on your dog's activity level. At the first sign of your dog tiring, pack it up and get back on the road.

Do bring toys and balls to throw and find sticks to fetch. This is exactly why you are both there:
to HAVE FUN!

Things to Know:
Drinking too much seawater can cause violent episodes of diarrhea and vomiting in dogs. When packing your dog's beach gear, take a large container of fresh drinking water and a bowl.

If your dog is new to Dog Beach, take it slow. Keep them on their leash until you can be sure of how they will react to the sand, sea, and especially other dogs and people.

If your dog has a history of being aggressive toward other dogs or people, Dog Beach may not be the best place for him/her.

If you have a dog with a pink or light-colored nose, apply sunscreen before arriving at the shore.

Another mandatory item is a supply of poop bags, as well as a grooming brush and beach towels to remove sand from your dog's fur before driving home.

DOG BEACH DANGERS
Proudly presented by
WWW.GEOVET.COM

Spending time with your dog at the beach over summer can be highly rewarding and a lot of fun for all. However, there are some hidden dangers you must be careful of when heading to your favourite sunny spot. If your dog is prone to scavenging be on the watch for puffer fish which commonly wash up on our shores. They cause an ascending paralysis resulting in your dog becoming wobbly on its legs, vomiting, and collapsing with the final result being an inability to breathe. Emergency Veterinary treatment is required in these cases. These signs are quite similar to a snake bite and snakes may also be found on the beach in the warmer parts of the day so be on the look out for our venomous reptiles. Keep a watchful eye on your dog in the water as occasionally they can run into trouble with near drownings and poisonous creatures, such as stingrays. They can shoot a poisonous barb into the pet if accidentally trodden on. This causes a very painful and nasty wound requiring treatment or surgery. Taking dogs to the beach in the cooler times of the day will also help avoid heatstroke, especially for our dogs with short snouts, such as bulldogs and pugs who may have trouble breathing. Dogs do not sweat like humans and rely on there respiratory system to keep cool. Interactions with other dogs are common on the beach, so ensure your dog is well socialised and trained if you let it off the lead. Dog fights are not uncommon, another potential danger at the beach or park. Keep an eye out for old fishing line and gear, as pulling fish hooks out of lips and tongues is no laughing matter and usually requires sedation or anaesthesia. So keep safe, and enjoy the beach with your dog.

DOG BEACH
TOP 10 DOG-FRIENDLY
BEACHES IN THE USA (2012)

Proudly presented by
WWW.DOGICA.COM

1) Fort DeSoto Beach, Florida
Dr. Beach judged this beach 2005 Best Beach in America and we voted best beach for dogs. Showers and drinking water are provided. Enter the front gate by the parking lot, take your dog off-leash, walk through the L-shaped park to the back gate. Go out the back gate, down a short sandy path and onto the perfect beach for dogs and people.

2) Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore - Michigan
The Lakeshore also contains many cultural features including the 1871 South Manitou Island Lighthouse, three former Life-Saving Service/Coast Guard Stations and an extensive rural historic farm district. In 2011, the park was named by ABC's Good Morning America as the "Most Beautiful Place in America".

3) Del Mar Beach San Diego, California
For good reason, Del Mar is one of the most popular beach communities and San Diego County. Great beaches, fairgrounds, horseracing, and a quaint, upscale village provide plenty of activities for everyone. Powerhouse Park, with a full playground, is especially nice for families with young children. Beachgoers can also find good, cheap eats at Roberto's taco stand on Carmel Valley Road, overlooking Los Penasquitos Lagoon. Plus, the song Dog Beach Boogie helped this beach's ranking.

4) Cape San Blas, Florida
Just 35 miles south of Panama City, but feeling as if it is worlds away, Cape San Blas beaches are peaceful, not overdeveloped; in fact, you can sometimes walk a mile or two in the off season without seeing another dog or person. The state park at the end of the cape was named 2002 Best Beach In America by Dr. Beach (a real person, not a doggie but most doggies would agree).

5) Fort Funston State Park, California - Pet Friendly Rentals
Fort Funston is a popular San Francisco dogwalking location. Most visitors walk the paved Sunset Trail, a north to south route on the bluff, and reach Ocean Beach via Fort Funston's northern section. Fort Funston's stretch of Ocean Beach is where you'll see scores of dripping wet dogs, romping across the sand with driftwood stick in their mouths.

6) Dog Friendly Cannon Beach - Cannon Beach, Oregon
Cannon Beach is recognized by its well-known landmark, Haystack Rock, located to the southwest of downtown Cannon Beach, near Tolovana Park. This igneous rock has an elevation of 235 feet, and is often accessible at low tide, especially in the summertime. There is a small cave system that penetrates the rock and can be seen from the coastline. The rock is also protected as a marine sanctuary, Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and events are not allowed within 100 feet of either side of the rock.

7) Montrose Dog Beach - Chicago, Illinois
The Montrose Dog Beach is Chicago's first legal off-leash beach. This dog beach is located on the Northwest corner of Montrose Beach (the point closest to the city). Just follow Wilson Avenue until it curves to the left at the lake. Look for the big corrugated steel walls of the old Boat Launch, and you're there.

8) Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint, Oregon
If your pooch isn't fond of windsurfing, no matter. This windsurfers' paradise will suit them just fine. Located just outside of Oregon State Park boundaries, south of Gold Beach.

9) First Landing State Park - Chesapeake Bay, Virginia
One of the finest state parks you'll find anywhere features an ocean-type beach at the mouth of the Chesapeake. You can easily hike with your dog for over an hour on the beach with views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and ocean-going vessels in view the entire time according to Hike with Your Dog.

10) Dog Beach - Key West, Florida
There are only a few small beaches on Key West, but Dog Beach is a Bring Fido favorite. Dogs will have some fun in the sun here, but be sure to keep a close eye on your pup, as this is a rocky beach. After getting a little exercise on the beach, head over to Louie's Backyard, which is located next door to the Dog Beach and is a pet-friendly place to grab a refreshing beverage.
